Before my wife and I got married, we were in a marriage growth group. One thing that 2 told to us was don’t go into a marriage with expectations of what a wife or husband is supposed to be or act like. Don’t go into a marriage thinking that “my wife is going to do x, y, and not z. Which is hard because we all do it. We all have these expectations because of what our parents did (or didn’t do), or from what we perceived in the world around us.

The thing about those expectations, which aren’t based on the person you’re in a relationship with but a preconceived notion, is that they lead to false disappointment. False disappointment, because your husband or wife didn’t even know they were being measured against something.

Why do I bring this up? Because this is exactly what is happening on the Internet after the first day of Google I/O. People are taking to the forums and voicing disappointment with what was announced.

-HANGOUTS SUX, NO SMS INTEGRATION

-GALAXY S4 GOOGLE EDITION TO EXPENSIVE WHO WILL BUY THAT?!?

-PLAY MUSIC ALL ACCESS IS A STUPID NAME

-I THOUGHT THIS WAS CROSS PLATFORM, WHERE’S WINDOWS PHONE?!?

-NO ANDROID 5.0/KEY LIME PIE = FAIL

Google never said they were going to do any of this. What they did say was Google I/O was going to be developer focused. What Google did release was:

-Music subscription service
-New Cards UI to Google Books, and Music
Voice search to Chrome
-Reminders, battery efficient GPS, and contextual awareness to Search
-New UI for desktop and mobile Google Maps
-Play Games Service with leaderboards, multiplayer, in game chat, and cloud save states and is cross platform.
-Cloud syncing of app data
-A unified messenger that’s only missing Voice but promised Voice integration in the near future.
-An S4 unlocked and running stock Android
A brand new Android dev environment (this is a lot bigger than it sounds)

That sounds like a lot of stuff. You had problems getting Hangouts installed 5 minutes after the keynote? Sorry, rolling out an over-the-air update to millions of people at the same time can be a little tricky. Upset that Hangouts doesn’t support SMS? It’s an initial release of a service with loads of other features. Give it a break. In addition to that. Stop acting like it’s a feature that can’t be added down the line. Facebook Messenger didn’t launch with SMS integration either. It came later. Price of the Google Edition S4 to high? Don’t buy it…or save your money if that’s what you really want. That is the true cost of unlocked unsubsidized high end devices

I still sometimes have expectations of my wife. She does things in ways I wouldn’t do them or things I wouldn’t think to do. But you know what I love about her? She does things in ways I wouldn’t think to do things and she does things I wouldn’t think of. If you can rid yourself of the expectations you put on other people…or companies keynote addresses and see them for what they truly are, then imagine all the compelling and amazing things you’d actually realize were in front of you.

Iron Man 3 opened this past weekend. I saw it and all I could think was that, “I want to be Tony Stark.” If you’ve seen any Iron Man movie, you’ve seen the amazing technology that Tony Stark possesses and as a nerd, I couldn’t have been more green with envy. It makes you want the future now.

I then think of all the advancements in technology that we have. We have technology that is currently being developed that is location-aware, can take pictures, record videos, all from a wearable small display. That is the future. But we don’t have to wait for the future to see amazing technology.

We have so much cool tech around us that we are becoming desensitized. I formed & communicated with a group in real time about movie times, then proceeded to buy those tickets all from my phone. When I got to the movie theatre, I then passed the ticket booth, walked right up to the counter who then scanned my phone & let me into the theatre to watch a movie in 3D.

The technology that we surround ourselves with is absolutely incredible. To say that we aren’t living in the future would be a lie. To say that technology hasn’t enriched our lives would be a travesty to all of those amazing scientists and dreamers who made the world that we live in a possibility.
